  • You can reach Cape Sounion via KTEL buses from Athens. You’ll pass through many coastal towns including Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Voula, and Varkiza on the way. The bus will drop you off outside the Temple of Poseidon entrance at the base of the hill.

By car

Distance: About 77 km
Travel time: 1.5 to 2 hours

Route:

  • Coastal route: via Posidonos and Athinion Souniou road
  • Highway route: via A6/E94 and EO91
  • You can easily drive down to Cape Sounion from Athens. The car journey takes between one-and-a-half and two hours, depending on traffic conditions. You can go via the highway route or the coastal route, both of which have several interesting historical and popular tourist landmarks along the way.

Main entrance: There is one main entrance to the Temple of Poseidon, which is located at the bottom of the cliff. You’ll find a visitor center, restrooms, a cafe, souvenir shops, the intercity bus stop and parking for cars nearby. There is a parking area further down the road.

To reach the temple: A steep path leads up the hillside from the entrance to the Temple of Poseidon, which is located at the top of the cliff. It will take you around 30 to 45 minutes to hike up the path.

  • Wheelchair access: The path from the base of the cliff to the Temple of Poseidon at the top is a bit steep and uneven. It may be difficult for wheelchair users to navigate the entire route. However, there is a viewing platform up the path from where you can see the temple.
  • For elderly visitors and those with mobility issues: If you have limited mobility but can walk with aid, you can tackle the path to the Temple of Poseidon. You can take breaks along the way as required.
  • General aid: There are ramps, handrails and armrests along the path to help you climb. You’ll also find benches at intervals where you can rest.
  • Strollers: Parents with small children can bring their strollers up to the temple.
  • If you’re traveling from Athens to Cape Sounion by public KTEL buses, arrive at the bus stop at least 30 minutes before your departure time to make sure you catch the bus and get a good seat. It’s a beautiful drive and you can see many heritage sites along the way.
  • Use the restrooms before trekking up to the Temple of Poseidon, as there are no facilities at the top. 
  • If you’re taking a sunset tour, keep in mind the information center and cafe close around 5:30pm. If you want to get a snack, it’s best to do so before ascending the hill.
  • There is no cloakroom or storage facility at the Temple of Poseidon site. Avoid bringing suitcases or heavy bags with you. 
  • It can get windy and chilly at Cape Sounion during sunset, so carry a light jacket. 
  • The Temple of Poseidon Sounion is a protected historical monument. To preserve the monument and for your safety, stay on the designated paths and don’t climb the ruins.
